Review: The Ken Onion Shun Knife Line

Describe the Ken Onion Shun Knives in as few words as possible: Sturdy, Slick, Sharp, and Downright Sick

My manager at work alerted me to an amazing knife deal and I managed to score 8 Ken Onion Shun knives and the honing steel for almost 65% off retail price. I would never buy these knives at full retail cost, that’s just crazy, but the deal was too good to pass up.
The set included the following Ken Onion Series Shuns:
6″ Chef Knife
7″ Santoku
4″ Chef Knife
5″ Serrated Utility Knife
9″ Slicing Knife
3″ Paring Knife
Boning ...

A Weekend of Delicious Food Debauchery – Chicago Style!

Ready, Set, Eat!
What a weekend it was! I flew my friends Stu and Kurtis over from New Jersey to Chicago to show them what Chicago food is all about. It was their first time visiting the city and aside from what they knew from watching the Chicago episode of No Reservations…they had no prior knowledge about the city. Most travelers who visit an unfamiliar town indulge in sight seeing, exploring, and eating, in this case with my friends, they didn’t give a rat’s ass about sightseeing and exploring, they wanted ...

A Camera For You Foodies, The Canon S90

So there you are, at a dimly-lit restaurant, taking pictures of the food as it is served to you. You go home to upload the pictures and what do you get? Either a washed out picture from the bright flash, or a dark picture that looks grainy (lots of noise!). Honestly, those hand-held compact cameras are lousy when it comes to taking pictures in low light. While a dSLR camera might just be the solution, it’s bulky and inconvenient to lug around. Well, not to fear because the Canon S90 ...

Sweet Potato Fries, An Addiction Worth Having

Some addictions are bad, like crack for instance. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are addictions worth having. In my case, I have been addicted to Alexia Sweet Potato Fries. I’ve been eating these as an after work snack for almost two months now and have yet to become bored of them. The most appealing factor is that they are already julienned and are lightly seasoned. Since most of the legwork is done, all there is to do is pre-heat the oven for a bit and then throw ...

King Corn: You Are What You Eat

Back in the days of high school science and chemistry class, we all learned that we’re carbon-based life forms. Well, to be more exact, we’re more like corn-based life forms. As the documentary points out, corn has found it’s way into almost every item imaginable. Most of the corn grown in America today isn’t used for human consumption, but is instead used to create sweeteners, animal feed, and cosmetic ingredients.
Think you’re eating 100% beef, well that cow you’re eating was raised on corn feed, so if you’re looking to avoid ...

Chicago, You Are Making Me FAT!

Today marks my third week in the Windy City, and aside from working, I’ve been eating…and eating…and eating. I’ve always had trouble gaining weight, but it looks like that trouble may be over. At the rate that I’ve been eating, I might soon have enough insulation to brave the chilly and harsh Winter that’s coming down the road.
Chicago is a mecca for food lovers, even in the towns located near the it. The city is so diverse and has so many dining options that it’s bound to satisfy the hunger ...

At Mitsuwa’s Blue Fin Tuna Cutting Event

I’ve always been a fan of MItsuwa. There’s a place in my heart for it. Selling all things Japanese and then some, it really knows how to attract a crowd with its special events. This weekend, it was holding it’s annual blue fin tuna cutting demonstration and it was neat to watch it being done in person. I realized that turning that hulking mound of fish into sashimi isn’t an easy task. It took three people just to remove a quarter of the meat.

Getting ready to cut up this 300lb ...

Settling In Chicago Style

Well, it’s been a little over two weeks since my last post. So what’s been going on so far? Well, I’ve successfully moved to Chicago. My furniture finally came and my apartment is pretty much set up. I started my new job and I’ve been stuffing my face with food.

I’ve been trying hard to stay home to cook, but with so many restaurants around, it’s been quite a challenge. There’s something to eat around almost every corner, and from my observations, Chicagoans know how to throw it down. It’s a ...

Time To Move, Be Back Later!

kgcphoto.com
I gave myself a month to get ready for the move to Chicago, and I have to admit, a month’s time isn’t nearly enough. There’s still lots to do and I start my new job nxt week. Amidst the packing, logistics, and goodbye visits, it’s been pretty strenuous. The movers came today and my apartment is pretty much barren, ‘cept for a stool, small table, and a few pots and pans.
My Internet service will be disconnected very soon and I have yet to schedule service at my new place. I’ll ...

Sugar Rush, Courtesy of Momofuku Bakery and Milk Bar

Last night, I left Pure Food and Wine mildly satiated and was in search of a filling desert joint. I was craving cake to be more exact. Plugging in the word “dessert” into the Yelp search bar, Momofuku Bakery and Milk Bar popped up and it was just two blocks away. Seeing that Angela and I had never been there, there was no better time to go and get a sugar fix.

Upon entering, the senses are filled with scents of butter and sugar, it’s exactly how a bakery should smell. ...
