Starbucks is looking to expand once again, only this time in a bold new direction. The company is testing a new concept to lure evening customers. Starting next week, the new store, 15th Ave. Coffee and Tea inspired by Starbucks, will be launched in Seattle and will be offering customers not only coffee and tea, but also wine and beer. Two other locations in Seattle have already been planned to outfit the new store, and if all goes well, expansion to other cities.

Starbucks started to roll out its value meal breakfast pairings today. $3.95 will get you a coffee and an egg sandwich, oatmeal, or coffee cake. When bought together, the items will save customers $1.20. The company has been plagued as being a premium coffee and food provider and the breakfast pairings is a strategy to break existing consumer perceptions. Not too mention the stiff competition that it has been facing from McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts.

All the noise about Starbucks offering value meals to the masses has come to fruition. Starting on March 3, customers will have multiple value meal selections to choose from, such as a tall latte and an oatmeal. Laying of 6,700 employees and closing 300 stores just isn’t enough to keep the company from being roasted. The details are slim, but there are talks behind closed doors that Starbucks might be offering value meals, or more appropriately, “several breakfast pairings” at “attractive” prices.
Without a doubt, former Starbucks patrons unwilling to pay for a premium coffee product, have found refuge at McDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts. While it’s not the same product, it’s good enough to satisfy their coffee cravings.

Starbucks has recently started to serve healthier breakfast options. While I do not know if this is a move to satisfy the needs of their health conscious customers, or is a way to curb their poor performance in the market, it seems to be a good strategy to reach out to current and future consumers.
