It’s disappointing that we live in a time where we still have to be vigilant of what we put into our mouths.  More than ever, this is not the time to put your guard down.  Seriously, becareful of what you eat, it might just kill you, give you explosive diarrhea, or vomit until you dry heave.  Food recall news no longer come as a surprise and our faith in food safety regulation is waning, so will we ever regain our confidence in the food safety regulation industry?

European researchers have found a way to increase the amount antioxidents in tomatoes. By splicing genes from the Snapdragon flower into the tomato, not only do the anthocyanin levels incease threefold, but also turn the tomato purple. The generically modified tomatoes are said to contain antioxident levels that are comporable to bluberries and blackberries.

I came across a post today at ThatsFit.com that struck me with extreme interest.  The writer gives us readers a brief description of what foods should be avoided, such as raw food, nano foods, and even certain soy-based products.  There are also links to other external sources where you can read about the ‘6 most terrifying foods in the world’ and which raw foods to avoid.  Definitely worth a read.  I’m putting down a disclaimer that some of the images aren’t to be viewed by those …

Going out to eat this past week was more expensive than I had anticipated. After looking at my bank statement and my lack of cash, I realized that I should not have gone out to eat so many times, especially since that I’ve lost a good portion of my stock porfolio from the ailing economy. I normally don’t go out to eat too often, but the craving for certain kinds of food (Korean and Japanese)overcame my willpower of staying in to cook. In the past week, I managed to throw …

When it comes to competitive eating, the none other Famous Nathan’s Hot Dog contest comes to mind.  And while food competitions are gaining recognition and are broadcasted on ESPN and SpikeTV, seldom do we ever think about how dangerous competitive eating might be.  Even one of my close friends held a small chicken nugget eating contest the other day.  And although we were joking that he might not make it out alive afterwards, a joke can easily become reality.  At Dayeh University in Taiwan, a 23 year old student who …

It’s time to forget about the negative press on brussels sprouts and give them some love.  I believe televison holds some responsibility in enforcing the stereotype that brussels sprouts are gross and nasty tasting.  I even remember watching a cartoon where one of the characters accidentally eats a brussels sprout and his friends shrink themselves and their spaceship to go inside the kid’s body to remove the foreign object in the body – the dreaded brussels sprout.  The fact of the matter is, brussels sprouts are packed with nutrition, one …

It’s time for some useless information for your brain.  Last week, I came across a video on a rare blue lobster discovery in Toronto, Canada.  It so happens that around one in every two million lobsters are blue.  The blue color is caused by a genetic defect that makes the lobster produce an overabundance of protein.  When the protein combines with the red carotenoid molecule, astaxanthin, another complex is formed and gives the lobster its blue coloring.  Not only can lobsters turn blue, but also yellow (1 in 30 million), and …

When you pop one of those delicious gummy bears in your mouth, just remember, there’s more than meets the eye. As made evident by artist Jason Freeny, you are a heartless human being. There’s more than just sugar and gelatin inside those innocent, sweet, and chewy gummy bears. As you can see, they are just like us. And knowing that most of you chew on multiple gummy bears at a single time…well thats makes you as much of an animal as the bears.

Check out Jason’s Website here for his artwork.

A couple of my friends organized a chicken nugget eating contest two weeks ago and today was the day where 6 wanna-be professional eaters met up at a local Wendys for the nugget showdown.  The winner received a year’s worth of bragging rights, hours of indigestion, elevated blood pressure, and a trophy a mother hen would be proud of.  My good buddy emerged victorious after stuffing 67 nuggets down his gullet.  The runner up finished with a close 65, and third place managed to throw down 62.  I wish I …
