My Food Allergy Test Results

13 October 2008 No Comment posted by Kin

I went to the allergist today for part two of my allergy test:  food allergies.  I took a blood test last Tuesday to test for shellfish/fish and a skin prick test today for common food allergens.  I had more food allergies than I had initally thought, and what’s even more peculiar, I tested negative for foods I thought I was still allergic to (crab, lobster, peanuts).  During the consultation with my doctor, we went over the list of food and what I was allergic to.

So here are my results:

Fruit - Even though I tested negative for fruit, certain fruits I eat cause my lips and throat to itch.  As my doctor explained it, since I’m allergic to certain protiens in all types of tree pollen, similar strains of the proteins that are found in the fruit will cause a slight reaction that is isolated to the mouth and throat region.

  • Apple (negative)
  • Pear (negative)
  • Banana (negative)
  • Strawberry (negative)
  • Grapefruit(negative)
  • Orange (negative)
  • Cantaloupe (negative)
  • Watermelon (negative)
Nuts - I always knew I was allergic to certain types of nuts.  What caught me by surprise was that I am no longer allergic to peanuts, but did test positive to sesame.  Positve results range from a 1 to a 4, with 4 being the most severe.
  • Almond (positive – 2)
  • Brazil Nut (positive -1)
  • Cashew (positive – 2)
  • Hazelnut (positive – 1)
  • Peanut (negative)
  • Pecan (positive – 1)
  • Walnut ( positive – 1)
  • Sesame (positive – 2)
Vegetables - Now this caught me by surprise.
  • Stringbean (positive – 2)
  • Tomato (negative)
  • Green Pea (positive- 2)
  • Corn (positive – 2)
Fish/Shellfish - When I was testing for this, I was pretty sure I would react to the lobster and crab allergens.  I was wrong.
  • Clam (negative)
  • Lobster (negative)
  • Shrimp (negative)
  • Fish Mix (negative)
  • Scallop (negative)
  • Crab (negative)
  • Tuna (negative)
  • Salmon (negative)
Meat/Poultry - I knew this wasn’t going to be a problem.
  • Beef (negative)
  • Chicken (negative)
Grains - I was somewhat suprised by these results.  Allergic to soy…oh boy.
  • Rice (negative)
  • Oat (positive – 1)
  • Barley (negative)
  • Wheat (negative)
  • Soy (positive – 2)
Dairy - I never really had any issue with dairy, but I did suspect milk though.
  • Cow Milk (negative)
  • Egg (negative)
  • Casein (negative)
The doctor told me I shouldn’t be worried about the level one positive reactions, as they are minor and could be false positives.  He told me to have a Benadryl handy in case I do decide to eat the food that might trigger a small allergic reaction.  Well, that’s it.  I’m glad I went through it, and it seems as if I don’t have to avoid many types of food.  So if you haven’t had an allergy test before, or if it’s been years since you’ve had one, go get one done, you’ll never know what you might be or no longer be allergic to.
