Attack of the Clones!

In mid January, the FDA approved human consumption of food from clones of cattle, swine, and goats. Just because a product is FDA approved, it doesn’t necessarily mean the food is 100% safe. The FDA track record isn’t exactly impressive. Their purpose for supporting cloning is to “improve the overall value of a given herd by creating genetic copies of donor animals, resulting in a herd that produces higher-quality milk and meat (cnn.com).” What ever happened to breeding animals from a strong and healthy mother and father? A cloned animal might look healthy on the outside, but who knows what is going on in the cellular level. Scientific research and testing is limited by the technology we have today and we might miss certain defects that might have occurred during the cloning process. While we won’t be eating the cloned animals themselves, the offspring they produce are fair game. From my tone, you probably figured out that I’m against eating cloned meat. It just doesn’t sound natural to be eating a product from cloned animals. I believe we should be given a choice, such as deciding whether or not to consume organic products over non-organic products. Then again, the word “cloned” doesn’t exactly sound appetizing. So is a cloned product considered “all natural?”
