…and today’s secret ingredient is…well, you already know. This is just for dramatic effect. Cue music!
I ran across an article on MSNBC.com about Iron Chef America. It spoke about how the contestants are given an idea of what the secret ingredient will be during the day of competition. Peter Kelly, who defeated Iron Chef Bobby Flay, chronicles his journey from the first call from the Iron Chef Producers to the end of the competition.
The contestants who will be competing on the show are given three possibilities of what the secret ingredient might be weeks in advance. Different ingredient lists are then created for each secret ingredient to best complement it. This also gives the teams opportunities to practice and to rehearse. On the day of the competition, ingredients from one of the lists are purchased and are laid out early morning. The type of ingredients laid out pretty much gives away the secret ingredient to be used.
Still, cooking and doing what they do in the alloted 60 minutes under all the pressure, is amazing.
