
I’m a little late with this post. I read it a few days ago on Slashfood and it caught my attention. You’ll think twice about asking for that slice of lemon with your water after reading this. Passaic County Community College in New Jersey conducted a research study to see how much bacteria can be found on those lemon slices served at restaurants. Well, it seems that of the 76 lemon wedges from 21 different restaurants, 70% had some kind of microbial growth. The researchers were able to identify 25 different forms of bacteria and yeast on the pieces of lemon. Amongst the type of bacterium found was of fecal, skin, and of salivary origin. Although there have been no illnesses connected to lemon wedges served in restaurants, those with a weakened immune system might be more susceptible.
