I was in class last night and we were discussing about product failures by major companies. One of the products we discussed was a food product that was introduced by McDonald’s in the 1950’s. Ray Kroc, the owner of McDonalds, noticed that hamburger consumption decreased on Fridays. What he realized was that the Catholics didn’t eat meat on Fridays and there was no other alternative to sell at the franchises. Well, the best meat substitute he could find was pineapple. He deep fried the pineapple and placed it in between two buns with the regular burger fixings. Needless to say, it didn’t sell well and it only lasted a few months on the market until it was pulled. It wasn’t until the early 1962 when one of the franchisee owners came up with the classic Filet-O-Fish Sandwich.
