Chain Restaurant Meals Loaded With Sodium
Salt, once a form of currency and touted as a contributing factor in the development of civilization, might cause the end of today’s civilization. The Center of Science in the Public Interest released a new report today warning about the unsafe levels of sodium in chain restaurant meals, and the numbers are staggering.
We all go out to eat, whether it be taking a break from cooking at home, or just going out to enjoy with others, seldom do we think about what goes into the ingredients in the food we order. Even though diners do ask about how the food is prepared once in a while, salt rarely makes it onto the questionnaire. For years, health advocates have been communicating to the public on reducing the intake of salt. Even New York City is thinking about waging a war against salt. It’s yet another item to think about when we order off the menu. Way to kill the dining experience. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
People with high blood pressure, African Americans, and people middle-aged and older—70 percent of the population—should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams (mg) of sodium daily, according to the government’s dietary advice. Others should consume no more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day. – cspinet.org
While 2,300 mg of sodium might seem like a high number, it’s equivalent to a teaspoon of salt.
“Who knows how many Americans have been pushed prematurely into their graves thanks to sodium levels like those found in Olive Garden, Chili’s, and Red Lobster?” asked CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson. “These chains are sabotaging the food supply. They should cut back and give consumers the freedom to decide for themselves how much salt they want.” – cspinet.org
CSPI examined 17 chain restaurants and discovered that 85 out of 102 meals had more than a day’s worth of sodium, that’s 83% of meals! Here’s the full report (PDF Alert!), but let me highlight a few meals.
| Restaurant | Meal | Sodium | Days Worth |
| Red Lobster |
Admiral’s Feast (4,662), Caesar Salad w/ |
7,106 mg | 3.1 |
| Chili’s |
Buffalo Chicken Fajitas w/ Tortillas & |
6,916 mg | 3.0 |
| Olive Garden |
Tour of Italy (lasagna) (3,830), 1 Breadstick |

Check out the report for the rest of the statistics. I was surprised by some of the items. I guess I’ll be thinking twice before I order that Bacon Turkey Bravo Sandwich from Panera.
