NYC Catches Up To LA With Cleanliness Ratings
Over the next two years, close to 25,000 restaurants in New York City will be posting inspection rating signs on their windows or vestibules. It is part of a new initiative by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to improve the sanitation of restaurants, the quality of food, and the reduction food-borne illnesses.
Similar to the system used in Los Angeles, New York’s will be based on letters from A through C. A restaurant with an A rating will be inspected annually, while a B rating garners two inspections during the year, and finally, a restaurant with a C rating will be inspected three times.
Come to think of it, a C-rated restaurant might be as sanitary as an A-rated restaurant because the C restaurant has to go through more inspections during the year, and has to uphold cleanliness three times as often in order to pass inspection.
