
We Need More Healthy Snacks!
I was walking by the snack machine today at the office and I wondered how many of the snacks in there were considered to be healthy. Out of over thirty types of snacks,there were four snacks that had a green leaf next to the position number. Along the side of the left interior panel, there is a large post-up that describes the meaning of the green leaf. Snacks with a green leaf are considered to be balanced choices.
To qualify, a balanced choice snack has to meet the following criteria:
- 7 net grams of fat or less
- 260 calories or less
- 250mg of sodium or less
With criteria like that, over thirty snacks didn’t make the cut. It’s the right step in the right direction, but having only four qualifiers, it’s a long road ahead. We need more healthy snack choices!
